New Subjectivities

Danae Haratsis (1st Year)

Within the revitalisation of London’s public realm there have been clear improvements to the city’s civil commons, articulating notions of respect, tolerance and politeness. Civicness on the other hand is deeply related to public institutional settings, places speaking of power, forums that promote dialogue and debate, protest and conflict resolution. This project asks how civicness can re-emerge in London’s homogenised civil spaces? It reimagines the public sphere as a series of civic complexes, as centres of resistance, acting as gatherings of ideologies about the collective space - a domain that goes beyond streets and squares, equipped with facilities/amenities/services. It takes the City of London’s brief for a new music hall and uses it to create an institutionalized public space in this setting.
